About guide

Exploring the museums of Paris alone can be a daunting experience, but our expert art history guides are on hand to make your visit a breeze – to introduce you to some of the most highly acclaimed works of art in the world, to take you deep into their history, but also to take you away from the tourist track. Our museums tours are lead solely by accredited guides with an abundance of knowledge, who give you the chance to explore some of the most breathtaking exhibitions in the world with a private, personable and approachable guide.

Highlights

You know about Van Gogh’s ear. You’ve heard of Monet’s water lilies. But how much do you really know about the treasures inside the Musée d’Orsay? Masterpieces from Monet, Van Gogh, Pissaro, Manet, Degas & many more are awaiting you!

Skip the long lines and follow your guide on a private 2 hour journey through the cafes, cabarets, dance halls and salons of 19th Century Paris, illustrated by some of the most talented fingers to ever hold a paintbrush. And the paintings themselves are only part of the story—what’s equally exciting are the eccentric personalities and circumstances that led to the world’s first true modern art movement. Inspiration guaranteed!

The itinerary

Your guide will start with a bit of backstory of how the building was transformed from its former use as a train station and hotel into a renowned museum.

You'll explore the story and significance of star pieces, such as Déjeuner sur l’Herbe by Manet, Starry Night by Van Gogh, Rouen Cathedral by Monet, or Dance at the Moulin de la Galette by Renoir.

The final part of the visit will allow you to have breathtaking views of the city through the giant clock towers that sit on either end of the building, and admire the ballroom decorated in a turn-of-the-century style.

Please note that due to museums loaning works or collections to other museums, Localers cannot guarantee that every work listed on our website will be on display. We try our best to notify our clients when a work they have requested will not be available for their viewing.

F.A.Q.

What if my preferred departure time isn’t available online?

Although we schedule tours for certain days of the week, departures are possible every day except on Mondays when the museum is closed (and some French holidays). However to avoid crowds we recommend scheduling your tour either on weekday afternoons or after 5pm on Thursdays for a special evening tour.

Can I book this tour if my group is larger than 6 people?

Please contact our customer service team if your group is larger than 6 people. Museum rules are strict – no more than 4 in a group, so if yours will be larger we’ll need to make special arrangements with the museum ahead of time.

How long will my museum ticket be valid?

The ticket we provide you with will be valid for the entire day, meaning once your tour is finished you’re free to stay inside the museum and browse around, have a snack in the restaurant, or revisit some of your new favorite paintings!

Victor is a wonderful guide: friendly, knowledgeable and able to think on his feet. He's a pleasure to be with and I enjoyed the d'Orsay MORE than I've enjoyed it on my own...and learned some
